During the World War II Zbigniew Szostak served in the Polish Armed Forces in the West, the 1586 Special Aircraft Squadron included, and numerously airdropped over the European occupied countries.
He got killed on August 14, 1944 together with the whole crew of Liberator B-24 J over Niepołomice Forest, having airdropped over the insurgent Warsaw.
Twice awarded the Virtuti Militari Cross and the Cross of Valour - four times.
